I have been working with transgender, gender queer and gender variant clients and their families for about 12 years, including transition support, couples and family work, as well as general psychotherapy. My overall approach is to provide a supportive, affirming and trans-knowledgeable environment in which trans and gender variant people can self-determine the path that is best for them, working collaboratively with clients and assisting in access to community resources. A strong intersectional, social justice / anti-oppression orientation is important to me and I try to integrate this focus into all of the work I do.
With partners and spouses of trans folks I work to create a space where feelings about transition, including grief and loss, changes in identity and sexuality, feelings about coming out to family and community, negotiating pace of transitioning, etc. can be discussed with mutual respect and support.
I am one of the co-founders of the Ingersoll Consult Group and listserv for mental health and medical professionals serving the trans* community. I also do trainings with health and mental healthcare professionals and organizations who wish to increase their competency working with the trans community. I also founded and run a non-profit called Beyond the Bridge (www.beyond-the-bridge.org) that works to reduce LGBTQ youth suicidality through community education, fundraising, and grants to local organizations that are working to reduce risk factors such as bullying, family rejection and homelessness.
Whenever possible I use the informed consent model to access medical transition; when necessary (e.g., required by medical provider) I use WPATH standards of care. I am happy to write letters for hormone therapy, gender affirming surgery and other transition related procedures.
